The March 15, 2015 deadline for proposal has passed.

We are now in the proposal review period.  All proposals are blind reviewed by volunteer  professionals in the field.  We hope to have decisions from the committee to applicants by the end of March!

Both WDA members and non-members are invited to submit proposals for presenting dance works in performance; presenting scholarly research as individual papers, in panels of researchers, or in pecha kucha format; conducting master classes or workshops; and leading choreographic labs. Interested individuals or groups may submit a maximum of two proposals for the Conference & Festival Assembly. For example, an individual might propose both a paper presentation and a master class. All proposals are double blind refereed. Application consideration will first be given to WDA artists whose work relates to the Assembly theme Spaces and Places: Exploring Dance Narratives Through Alternate Lenses.

Proposals are due by March 15, 2015, but applicants are encouraged to submit early as the review process and notification of accepted proposals will be ongoing, especially if they require official letters of acceptance for funding purposes. Consideration of and announcement of all accepted proposals will be completed by the end of March.

All proposals must be submitted and presentations conducted in English, unless the presenter can provide his/her own translator at the Conference & Festival. Incomplete proposals or proposals that exceed the stated maximum length will not be considered or accepted.

There is no application fee for current members of WDA. Non-members are encouraged to join WDA prior to submitting a proposal. Alternatively, non-member applicants may submit a non-refundable application fee of $30 via PayPal, credit card, international money order, or check drawn off a U.S. bank for each proposal submitted.

All presenters and performers involved in accepted performances will be required to register as an individual or as a group for the Conference & Festival Assembly to present. The registration fee for the event will be determined by the cost to produce all accepted activities, and historically has cost WDA members between $200-$300 per individual (reduced student and group rates will also be available). Non-WDA members pay an additional registration fee.  WDA-Americas is a not-for profit, member driven organization; and all fees are utilized in the administration of the organization's events and activities.

With Spaces and Places: Exploring Dance Narratives through Alternate Lenses as the focal point of the event, WDA-A encourages broad investigations into the following questions: How is dance affected by spaces and places? How are artists, educators, and researchers engaged in using traditional and alternative spaces and places? How might new engagements with spaces and places provide new opportunities for dance and dancers? How does space and place affect expression in dance? What changes emerge when dancing in new spaces and places?

With these questions in mind, we urge participants to propose new possibilities for the many different modes of presenting, experiencing, producing, and teaching dance. Proposals are not limited to or by the Conference and Festival’s theme, which is considered as a catalyst for discussion rather than a restraint.

Performance Proposal - Performance opportunities are open to dance artists working in a variety of genres including culturally specific styles. Works selected may be presented once in the 600-seat Kennedy Theatre, twice in a less formal studio-theatre setting, or twice in a site-specific location.

Scholarly Paper Proposal - Provides dance researchers a forum to share their scholarly research though presentation opportunities. Scholarly Paper Presentations are grouped together by the Conference committee with other paper presentations of complimentary subject matter. Paper presentations should run no more than 20 minutes each. Each grouping of presenters will be followed by a short period for questions and dialogue at the end of each group session.

Panel Discussion Proposal - Groups of three or more individual presenters may propose a panel presentation of 90 minutes. Panelists may allocate the time as they see fit for the purposes of their panel, but any question and answer time must be included in the 90 minute allocation.

Pecha Kucha Proposal - A format in which 20 slides are timed to be shown each for 20 seconds (no more than 7 minutes total). Scholars who have developed a strong research focus but are in the beginning processes of writing and presenting their research are encouraged to present in this format. This format is especially good for graduate students wanting to clarify research purpose statements and gather feedback and possible insights from other researchers. Scholars whose first language is not English may find this format useful since the key points can be placed on slides.

Master Class or Workshop Proposal - 90 minutes in length. Instructors will have the opportunity to present a focused learning experience in a studio setting to participants on a subject in which they have knowledge and expertise.

Choreographic Lab Proposal - An opportunity for choreographers to set/reset a work on participants who volunteer on the first day of the Assembly.  The work or work-in-progress is rehearsed daily and will be presented on the final day of the Conference & Festival in a studio or site-specific location.
